We show you where the information came from. Established evidence, emerging evidence, associations, causal findings and genuine uncertainty are different things. A link is useful only when the underlying publication actually supports the claim near it. If a source changes or a correction is warranted, contact the publication.

READ THE SCOPE BESIDE THE NUMBER.
The CDC estimate of 178,000 annual U.S. deaths from excessive alcohol use is an average over 2020–2021, published in 2024. WHO’s “more than 200” refers to diseases, injuries and other health conditions in which alcohol plays a causal role. These are different measures, geographies and periods. Neither is a live count of today.
